Andrew Rowan, DPhil

Andrew Rowan, DPhil – Dr. Andrew Rowan has more than 40 years of experience in animal welfare science and animal and environmental advocacy. He has served on many government and corporate consultative committees, on numerous Boards of national and international NGOs, and most recently served as the CEO of Humane Society International (HSI) and Board Chair of the HSUS Wildlife Land Trust. He launched and oversaw HSI’s street dog projects in Asia and Latin America. Dr. Rowan was a professor at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. He established the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy, launched an academic journal on human-animal relations, and was Chair of the Dept. of Environmental Sciences. Dr. Rowan has authored or co-authored numerous books and over one hundred academic papers on animal research and alternatives, companion animal and humane wildlife management, and human-animal interactions. He is a recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship, graduated from Oxford University with a DPhil in biochemistry, and has received numerous awards for his work.
Chinny Krishna, PhD

S. Chinny Krishna, PhD – Dr. S. Chinny Krishna is the founder and Managing Director of Aspick Engineering in Chennai, India. He is also one of the founders of the Blue Cross of India, an animal protection organization in Chennai that has been operating for more than fifty years. Dr. Krishna was the first to promote dog sterilization (Animal Birth Control) to improve the welfare of roaming dogs. He has received many honors and awards from animal protection organizations. Dr. Krishna has served as a Board member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals and the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations. He served three terms as Vice-Chair of the Animal Welfare Board of India, an Indian government position.
Kathleen Rowan, MPA,CPA

Kathleen Rowan, MPA, CPA – Kathleen Rowan has over 40 years of experience in the nonprofit arena, serving on nonprofit boards and executive positions. She has extensive experience in international relief and development. She served as the CEO of UOSSM USA (a medical relief charity working in Syria) and CFO of Counterpart International, Relief International, and EnterpriseWorks/Vita. Ms. Rowan’s portfolios have crossed all organizational disciplines, including strategic planning, program management, finance/accounting, IT, grants, contracts, and compliance. She is very conversant with the regulations and requirements of grants and contracts offered by governments and international funding agencies. She is a CPA and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. She received her master’s degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Her positions required her to travel widely, including to some of the most troubled countries in the world.
William V. Voorhees, CPA

William “Bill” Voorhees, CPA – William “Bill” Voorhees, CPA, was an Audit Partner at Calibre CPA Group with over 40 years of experience in the accounting industry. He has focused on the concerns and issues related primarily to nonprofit entities, including labor organizations, universities, government entities, and animal and environmental organizations. He is recognized in labor and employee benefit circles as an industry leader. He is known for his analytical and pragmatic approach to internal, regulatory, and compliance issues. Bill received a BSc in Business Administration from Georgetown University and is a Certified Public Accountant in D.C., California, and New York states. He has various professional memberships and engages with numerous charitable organizations, and has served as Treasurer of the Catholic Charities of D.C.
Eric Bernthal, JD

Eric “Rick” Bernthal, JD, served as a member of the Humane Society of the United States board for twelve years, seven as Chair of the Board. He has served on the boards of many other animal welfare and advocacy organizations, including the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Project Chimps, the South Florida Wildlife Center, Humane Society International, the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust, and the Nightingale Ranch Foundation. Rick practiced telecommunications and corporate law in Washington, DC, for over 40 years and served as the Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins’ D.C. office for more than a decade. He has extensive experience advising for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and has written and spoken widely on law firm management and animal advocacy issues.
Jacqueline Bruner, PhD

Jacqueline Southee Bruner is the North American representative for FSSC 22000, a globally recognized food safety management certification system used by many of the world’s leading food manufacturers.
A native of the United Kingdom, Jacqueline graduated from the University of Nottingham with a PhD in Animal Science before using her knowledge of in vitro techniques to contribute to the development of non-animal test systems to replace the use of animals in safety testing for the consumer goods industry. Jacqueline, now based in Washington DC, continues to work in the regulatory arena. She works to build a broader understanding of how international management systems can harmonize global food safety standards, help increase efficiencies in the food and agricultural sector, forge international compliance between the public and private sector, and ensure safe and sustainable food supply chains.
Julie Levy, DVM, PhD

Dr. Julie Levy is the Fran Marino Endowed Distinguished Professor of Shelter Medicine Education at the University of Florida. She focuses on the health and welfare of animals in shelters, feline infectious diseases, and humane alternatives for cat population control. She founded Operation Catnip, a nonprofit university-based community cat trap-neuter-return program that has spayed, neutered, and vaccinated more than 65,000 cats in Gainesville since 1998. In 2008, Dr. Levy joined Dr. Cynda Crawford to found Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine, an educational and discovery initiative with a global impact on the care of homeless animals. In 2014, she joined Dr. Kate Hurley to launch the Million Cat Challenge, a shelter-based campaign to save millions of cats in shelters across North America.
